Hello! My name is Joanne Laus and I have been teaching in the Oakland and San Jose Dioceses for more than 12 years. I began my teaching career as a 5th grade teacher at St. Joseph in Fremont, and before coming to St. John the Baptist, I taught 7th grade English/Language Arts at St. Christopher in San Jose for five years. It’s great to return to teaching 5th graders! It is a privilege and a ministry to be a part of this Catholic community, where I can help to build faith-filled students, life-long learners, and well-rounded individuals, in partnership with their parents.
I have a passion for literature and social studies, and often find ways to combine the two subjects to make both more accessible. Reading and writing are naturally a part of every subject, where I strive to encourage, facilitate, and challenge students on a daily basis. I believe in giving students an opportunity to express their own ideas, try new things, and grow from their experiences every day.
Before teaching, I had a 20 year career as a paralegal, but always knew that my passion was teaching children. After several years of volunteering as a tutor, I returned to school at UC Monterey Bay to receive my teaching credential, a decision I have never regretted. I look forward to new discoveries with my students every day.
When not teaching, I am usually reading, quilting, or traveling, sometimes all three at the same time.
