The St. John the Baptist School Chess Club provides an opportunity for students from kindergarten through eighth grade from our parish and school to learn and play chess with other students, as well as competing as a team locally. The chess club meets on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:30pm at the school with a combination of parent-led and computer-based instruction, and friendly competition. Seven students participated in a local tournament in Spring 2013,bringing home one trophy and six medals for the SJBS Knights Chess Team.
Students in grades 2 to 5 spend at least 30 minutes a week in coding. St. John School uses the app Kodable which begins with lessons on sequence, conditions, loops, and functions. The students get to apply this knowledge in programming in our resident robots. Jr. Robotics is for K-5 students, Robotics is open to grades 6-8. The clubs meet once a week to build, program, and complete challenges with the robots.
